Black Bean Burgers

  • 1.5 cups walnuts toasted
  • 2/3 cup onion chopped
  • 2/3 cup fresh cilantro snipped
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 28 oz black beans (canned) drained and rinsed (or 2x 15oz cans)
  • 1/4 cup green chile peppers (canned) diced
  • 2 Eggs lightly beaten (Vegans - mix 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed mixed with 6 tablespoons water, set aside until thickened)
  • 3/4 cup almond meal nut meal or GF breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper


  • In a food processor, add the walnuts, onion, cilantro, garlic, cumin, oregano, and basil. Pulse until just combined and add the black beans and green chile peppers. Pulse until just combined.
  • Transfer the mixture to a large bowl and add the eggs, nut meal, and black pepper. Using damp hands, shape the mixture into six (3/4-inch-thick) patties. Place the patties on a baking sheet, cover, and chill until ready to grill up to overnight.
  • Preheat a grill to medium heat and grill until cooked through and lightly golden, turning halfway through, about 10 minutes in total.
